Why is it important to use the writing process?

Here are five steps towards creating or identifying your personal writing process.

Prewriting. You’re ready to start writing.

Writing. Now you have your plan and you’re ready to start writing.

Revision. Your story can change a great deal during this stage.

Editing. You have overhauled your story.

Publishing.

A thesis statement controls the subject matter of the essay and states something significant to the reader. It is the one statement that summarizes the main point of the essay and states why the essay is important and worth reading. An essay that lacks a strong thesis will be inadequate and often lacking in focus.

So today, I’m sharing 10 pre-writing activities we’ve been doing at home to build strength in my preschooler’s hands.

Playdough. Just playing with playdough is great for building strength in hands.

Q-tip painting.

Cutting Practice.

Write in Corn Meal.

The purpose will be to inform, to entertain, or to persuade. Often these purposes will be combined in a paper, each purpose occurring in function of another. The main purpose of prewriting activities is to find the focus of the paper. Focus is the point on which all energy is concentrated.

This page presents several prewriting activities that may be useful as you begin working on an essay.

Thinking. It may seem odd to list “thinking” as a part of the prewriting process, but this usually is the first step.

Finding a topic or main argument for a paper is a difficult task for many writers, but one of the best ways to help you get started is to brainstorm. Brainstorming is the process of coming up with ideas. Finding a brainstorming technique that works for you can greatly improve your writing efficiency.

Pre-writing strategies use writing to generate and clarify ideas. While many writers have traditionally created outlines before beginning writing, there are other possible prewriting activities. Five useful strategies are brainstorming, clustering, free writing, looping, and asking the six journalists’ questions.

Let’s take a look at three helpful prewriting strategies: freewriting, clustering, and outlining.

Freewriting. Often the hardest part of writing is getting started.

Clustering. Clustering goes by many names: webbing, mind-mapping, bubbling, diagramming.

Outlining. Outlining is practically a dirty word to many students.

Benefits of Outlining. Used to organize one’s thoughts and information related to a project or paper, outlining helps students clarify their ideas. Structuring and organizing large volumes of information and research in a traditional outline is the first step in the writing process.

An outline allows a writer to categorize the main points, to organize the paragraphs into an order that makes sense, and to make sure that each paragraph/idea can be fully developed. Essentially, an outline helps prevent a writer from getting stuck when performing the actual writing of the essay.

Here are five steps to a strong outline:

Choose Your Topic and Establish Your Purpose. A lot of writers struggle to define the initial focus for their paper.

Create A List Of Main Ideas. This is the brainstorming part of the writing process.

Organize Your Main Ideas.

Flush Out Your Main Points.

Review and Adjust.

Below are the primary reasons for creating an outline.

Aids in the process of writing.

Helps you organize your ideas.

Presents your material in a logical form.

Shows the relationships among ideas in your writing.

Constructs an ordered overview of your writing.

Defines boundaries and groups.

An outline is a formal system used to think about and organize your paper. For example, you can use it to see whether your ideas connect to each other, what order of ideas works best, or whether you have sufficient evidence to support each of your points.

There are six main parts of a speech outline.

The first main part is the statement of the specific purpose and central idea.

The second main part is your introduction.

The third main part is transition and summaries.

The fourth main part is the body of your speech.

The fifth main part is the conclusion.

Remember that a topic outline lists words or phrases. A sentence outline lists complete sentences. A topic outline arranges your ideas hierarchically (showing which are main and which are sub-points), in the sequence you want, and shows what you will talk about.

After each heading in a topic outline for an essay, a maximum of several words is used to identify the topic or idea that will be discussed under the given heading. In a sentence outline, the thesis and topic sentence of each supporting paragraph are fully written out.

Topic shifting is a diversionary tactic in which one person in a discussion (the shifter) manages to subtly change the discussion’s topic to another, related but different topic, without explicitly announcing the change of subject or reaching any kind of mutual agreement that such a change is appropriate.

In expository writing, a topic sentence is a sentence that summarizes the main idea of a paragraph. It is usually the first sentence in a paragraph. Although topic sentences may appear anywhere in a paragraph, in academic essays they often appear at the beginning.

Essay outlines provide the skeleton, the bare bones, on which you can build your writing. They provide structure so that the ideas and thoughts flow logically and build towards a strong conclusion. Without an outline, an essay runs the risk of going off in different directions. Here’s how to write an essay outline.

The body of the paper follows the introduction. It consists of a number of paragraphs in which you develop your ideas in detail. Limit each paragraph to one main idea. a draft is your idea page. if u have a final draft, that is the page/paper you made BEFORE the last one.
