Man-made disasters are the consequence of technological or human hazards. Examples include stampedes, fires, transport accidents, industrial accidents, oil spills and nuclear explosions/radiation.

A natural hazard is a threat of a naturally occurring event will have a negative effect on humans. This negative effect is what we call a natural disaster. In other words when the hazardous threat actually happens and harms humans, we call the event a natural disaster.

An internal disaster is an event that occurs within the confines of the hospital (e.g., bomb scare, laboratory accident involving radiologic agents, power failure, fire, etc.). Disasters can be both internal and external (e.g., earthquake with mass casualties as well as damage to the internal hospital).

Every year, millions of people are affected by both human-caused and natural disasters. Disasters may be explosions, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, tornados, or fires. In a disaster, you face the danger of death or physical injury. Such stressors place you at risk for emotional and physical health problems.

Vulnerability – Weaknesses or gaps in a security program that can be exploited by threats to gain unauthorized access to an asset. A vulnerability is a weakness or gap in our protection efforts. Risk – The potential for loss, damage or destruction of an asset as a result of a threat exploiting a vulnerability.

Natural disasters fall into three broad groups: 1. Those caused by movements of the Earth. These occur with the minimum amount of warning and include earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis.

Human-made disaster is disaster resulting from man-made hazards as opposed to natural disasters resulting from natural hazards. Human-made disaster admits that all disasters are caused by humans. Human-made disaster involves an element of human intent, negligence, or error; or involving a failure of a man-made system.

A technological disaster is an event caused by a malfunction of a technological structure and/or some human error in controlling or handling the technology. The effects of a disaster on families and individuals may be long lasting and can endure for years.

Disaster Management can be defined as the organization and management of resources and responsibilities for dealing with all humanitarian aspects of emergencies, in particular preparedness, response and recovery in order to lessen the impact of disasters.

In a development oriented disaster management approach, the objectives are to reduce hazards, prevent disasters, and prepare for emergencies. Therefore, developmental considerations are strongly represented in the mitigation and preparedness phases of the disaster management cycle.

Disaster preparedness refers to measures taken to prepare for and reduce the effects of disasters. That is, to predict and, where possible, prevent disasters, mitigate their impact on vulnerable populations, and respond to and effectively cope with their consequences.
