What is in an EDC bag?

At the most literal level, your everyday carry (commonly initialized as EDC) is the collection of items you carry with you in your pockets or in your bag on a daily basis.

Dreaming of bugs and insects suggest that you are worried about something. They are symbolic of your anxieties or fears. Also consider the popular phrase “bitten by the bug” to imply your strong emotional ties or obsession with some activity, interest, or hobby.

Fire ants often attack small animals and can kill them. Unlike many other ants, which bite and then spray acid on the wound, fire ants bite only to get a grip and then sting (from the abdomen) and inject a toxic alkaloid venom called solenopsin, a compound from the class of piperidines.

It is more common to see ants attracted to sugary foods rather than a plain bag of sugar. Sticky, sugary items like popsicles and sugar water are more likely to attract ants than plain table sugar, but that doesn’t mean that ants won’t go straight for any sweet item they can get their hands on.

Ants feed on a large range of foods, from engine oil at the side of a road, to other ant species. Most ant species are omnivorous and eat seeds, nectar, and other invertebrates. Army ants are carnivorous, they hunt, kill and eat prey such as worms, spiders and even sometimes small vertebrates like lizards.

Fish is the primary food of bald eagles, but they will eat a variety of other animals and birds. Their prey items include waterfowl and small mammals like squirrels, prairie dogs, raccoons and rabbits.

Among species that reproduce sexually, the queen selectively uses the sperm cells retained from the nuptial flight, laying fertile or unfertile eggs depending upon the cyclic needs of the colony; the sex of each individual ant is determined by whether or not the egg is fertilized.

Ant Colony Survival Without a Queen. An ant colony may survive for the duration of the lifetime of the worker ants. The simple reason is that, without the queen to lay eggs, no other new member are added to the colony. Since all the workers are sterile, the ants do not survive for long without the queen.

In just a few days, a single army ant queen can lay up to 300,000 eggs. In part because of such attention, but also for genetic reasons not fully understood, the queen in many species lives essentially forever—at least from the perspective of her descendants in the colony.

For one thing, queen ants can be incredibly long-lived – one scientist had a queen that lived for almost 30 years. In the wild, it’s not uncommon to find queens that are more than a decade old. Ants from other castes may have a lifespan of a few months to a year or two.

Look at the size of the ant. For many types of ants, queens are much larger than regular worker ants.

See if there are wings on the ant. In many ant colonies, the queen is born with wings.
