A downside of gloss paints is their reflectivity. Reflective finishes make imperfections in a wall surface much more obvious than low-sheen paints. A satin (or “eggshell”) finish is much more forgiving of holes and patches than a paint with more sheen.

Do not, I repeat, do not use flat or eggshell paint on trim or doors. Especially not flat. Flat and eggshell paints don’t clean up as easily as semi-gloss and gloss sheens do. If you get dirt and grime on flat paint, you might as well go on and get your paint brush out to paint over it.

If you want to update semi-gloss painted walls but don’t want to sand and prime; or, if lead-based semi-gloss walls prevents you from sanding, it is possible to paint over semi-gloss walls with a satin-based paint without sanding or priming. Choose a satin paint with the same base in a similar color.

Generally, the shinier the paint sheen, the easier it is to clean and the better it resists moisture. Many people recommend using a semi-gloss in bathrooms since it virtually repels moisture. Eggshell and satin sheens are also recommended if your bathroom doesn’t get a lot of use—like a guest bathroom.

Semigloss, gloss, or satin–the harder the finish the better. Matte paint on kitchen cabinets is impractical; I wouldn’t even use eggshell finish. You want a surface that’s durable and wipeable, so you won’t be painting again for at least a few years.

Eggshell paint can refer to a color, usually an off white, but the reference generally refers to a sheen. There is no industry standard for paint sheens, so one company’s Eggshell can be another company’s Satin, Matte or Low Gloss.
