What are the accents on letters called?

Spanish. In Spanish, é is an accented letter and is pronounced just like “e” /e/. The accent indicates the stressed syllable in words with irregular stress, as in “éxtasis” or “bebé”. See Diacritic and Acute accent for more details.

The French “open e” (è) vowel. The first is an e sound quite similar to the English e sound that occurs in the word set. Thus open e sound is often represented in the spelling by è— that is, by the letter e with a grave accent (e.g. père, mère), or by ê— a letter e with a circumflex accent (e.g. prêt).

To type the letter e with the acute accent, as you would need in the Spanish name José or the French-derived adjective “passé,” for example, hold down the Alt key and type 0233 on the numerical page. To type the grave accent over the e in “fin de siècle,” type Alt + 0232.

In addition, French uses several accents: grave accents (à, è, and ù) and acute accents (é). A circumflex applies to all vowels, except Y (considered as a vowel): â, ê, î, ô, û. A tréma (French for dieresis) is also applied: ë, ï, ü, ÿ. Two combined letters (called orthographic ligatures) are used: æ and œ.

The circumflex accent marks the stressed vowel of a word in some languages: Portuguese â, ê, and ô are stressed “closed” vowels, opposed to their open counterparts á, é, and ó (see below).

Ë, ë (e-diaeresis) is a letter in the Albanian, Kashubian, Emilian-Romagnol and Ladin alphabets. The letter is also used in Seneca, Taiwanese Hokkien, Turoyo and Uyghur when written in Latin script.

Some diacritical marks, such as the acute ( ´ ) and grave ( ` ), are often called accents. Diacritical marks may appear above or below a letter, or in some other position such as within the letter or between two letters.

Accent marks are symbols used over letters, commonly vowels, to help emphasize the pronunciation of a word. Accent marks are commonly found in languages such as French, German, Italian, and Spanish.

A circumflex is also used in the word â, which is both a preposition, meaning “with, by means of, as”, and the third person non-past singular of the verbal noun mynd “go”. That distinguishes it in writing from the similarly-pronounced a, meaning “and; whether; who, which, that”.

The grave is typically used when the stressed vowel is the last letter of a multiletter word. In Ligurian, the grave accent marks the accented short vowel of a word in à (sound [a]), è (sound [?]), ì (sound [i]) and ù (sound [y]).

ë This is the “umlaut” or “trema”. In German and some Germanic languages it marks a transformation (umlaut) of the vowel, caused by phonotactics or vowel harmony. In French it is used to mark that a group of two vowels should not be conflated into one.

In music, an accent is an emphasis, stress, or stronger attack placed on a particular note or set of notes, or chord, either as a result of its context or specifically indicated by an accent mark. Accents contribute to the articulation and prosody of a performance of a musical phrase.

The acute is used only on é. It is known as accent aigu, in contrast to the accent grave which is the accent sloped the other way. It distinguishes é [e] from è [?], ê [?], and e [?]. Unlike other Romance languages, the accent marks do not imply stress in French.

È means “is” in modern Italian [?], e.g. il cane è piccolo meaning “the dog is small”. It is derived from Latin ĕst and is accented to distinguish it from the conjunction e meaning “and”. È is also used to mark a stressed [?] at the end of a word only, as in caffè.

Re: ë This does not denote a specific sound in Welsh – it is a diaeresis, indicating that the e is pronounced separately from the vowel which precedes it (i.e. it does not form a diphthong). It is used in the same way in English in the names Chloë nd Zoë.

Ë with diaeresis is the easiest case to deal with. The diaeresis (the two dots) signifies that the underlying “e” is pronounced as /?/ (as “e” in “bet”, i.e. the open e), no matter what comes around it, and is used in groups of vowels that would otherwise be pronounced differently.
