Pruning Everbearing Raspberries:

Do not prune the first year EXCEPT to remove dead, damaged or diseased wood.

Each spring select 5 or 6 of the most vigorous new canes and cut them back to 30 inches tall.

Do not remove last year’s fruiting canes- they will fruit again in early summer.

Hedgerow Planting. When planting raspberry bushes in a narrow hedgerow, you need to space red and yellow raspberries two and one-half to three feet apart and space purple and black raspberries three to four feet apart. You should leave a space of six to 12 feet between rows.

Summer Bearing Raspberry Pruning Tips. All summer bearing shoots with berries are second year shoots and should be pruned out, at ground level, after harvest. However, you also need to thin the first year canes if you want to have a good crop. Do this during the end of dormancy, in late winter or early spring.

To keep them producing well, blueberry bushes need to be pruned every year.

If your bushes have never been trimmed, be careful not to go overboard the first year: Remove no more than two or three of the oldest canes (more than seven years old).

Remove any diseased or broken wood, plus crossing branches.

Fertilizing After Planting. In the year following the first growing season, fertilize your raspberries twice in the spring: once in March and once in May. Apply 20 pounds of 10-10-10 fertilizer per 1,000 square feet of land to give your raspberries what they need in order to thrive that year.

Blueberries, strawberries and raspberries need full sun to produce fruit, but they are not your only options for growing berries. If you have a shady yard, you can still produce several varieties of tasty berries without a lot of sunlight.

Autumn fruiting raspberry canes are really easy to prune: Do nothing in the year of planting. Then each year just cut all the stems down to ground level in winter (when fruiting has finished and before February). Remove or burn the canes.

Cut the runners down to the ground with pruning shears, or by pinching them off with your fingers, being careful not to damage the strawberry bush or roots. Discard the runners and small plants away from the strawberry bed, preferably in your compost heap.

Raspberries (Rubus idaeus), a bramble fruit, grow in dense, thorny thickets, but regular pruning keeps them neat and contained. Most raspberry bushes have thorns, but some cultivated varieties are thornless. Hardiness varies by cultivar and extends from U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zones 4 through 9.

Blackberries are perennial plants which typically bear biennial stems (“canes”) from the perennial root system. In its second year, the cane becomes a floricane and the stem does not grow longer, but the lateral buds break to produce flowering laterals (which have smaller leaves with three or five leaflets).

To do tip blackberry pruning, use a sharp, clean pair of pruning shears and cut back the blackberry canes to about 24 inches. If the canes are shorter than 24 inches, simply prune off the top inch or so of the cane. While you are tip pruning, you can also prune off any diseased or dead canes.

The rule of thumb when pruning fruit trees is to do so when the tree is dormant during the winter. Cutting back sweet cherries is an exception to this rule. Sweet cherries are more susceptible to fungal and bacterial diseases, especially on recently cut limbs, so it is best to prune them in the late summer.

Pear tree pruning also begins at planting time. Cut back young, unbranched trees 33 to 36 inches above the ground to encourage good branching. If your new tree has plenty of branches, remove those that are less than 18 inches from the ground and those with crotches of less than 60 degrees.

When grown from seed, a sweet cherry may begin producing fruit in seven to 10 years. A sour cherry may begin producing fruit in four or five years. The tree, however, will not grow true to the parent, so the fruit may resemble any or none of the parent tree’s ancestors. Some trees grown from seed never produce fruit.

Cherry trees do not need lots of water every day; however, if you discover that your soil or your location’s environment require more frequent watering to avoid drought-stress to your cherry trees, adjust your watering schedule accordingly.

Sweet cherries are best suited for areas where temperatures are mild and humidity is low while tart cherries will grow in cooler climates and need about 2 months of winter temperatures below 45° F. Cherry tree root systems grow closer to the surface than those of many other trees, and cherry trees tend to have a large number of surface roots and sucker shoots that grow vertically from them. Because of their shallow root systems, cherry trees have the potential to cause significant damage to surface landscaping.

Pollination and Fruiting Habit of Non-Bearing Cherry Trees. The cherry tree, whether sweet or sour, needs several years of growth before it is mature enough to fruit. The cherry tree may also be susceptible to biennial bearing, wherein the tree flowers every other year.

Spring is the best time to plant. The best time to find plants, early spring, is also the best time to plant them, although you can put raspberries in anytime in the summer if you come into some healthy gift plants. Spring plants will establish better, though, and may well give you a few berries their first summer.
