The pH scale indicates acidity or alkalinity. A soil with a pH number below 7 is acid, while one with a pH above 7 is alkaline. Most cacti and other succulent plants grow well in slightly acidic soil around pH6. A few succulent plants grow naturally on limestone soils with a basic reaction, but an alkaline soil is more likely to kill plants than a slightly acidic one.

Vines like honeysuckle, clematis and Boston ivy thrive in alkaline soil. A wide range of flowering and ornamental plants are perfectly suited to these soil conditions as well. Options include lily, iris, bluebell, crocus, geranium, hyacinth, maidenhair fern, morning glory, poppy and daisy.

For instance, you can sprinkle fresh coffee grounds around acid-loving plants like azaleas, hydrangeas, blueberries, and lilies. Many vegetables like slightly acidic soil, but tomatoes typically don’t respond well to the addition of coffee grounds.

Popular plants such as azaleas, rhododendrons, blueberries, strawberries and heathers, are all acid-loving, meaning they need a soil pH of about 5.5. Knowing whether your soil is acidic or not is the first step to healthier plants season after season.

Somewhat Acid Soil Crops: The following crops prefer require a somewhat acid soil; they can tolerate a pH of 5.5 to 6.5:

Basil (5.5-6.5)

Carrot (5.5-7.0)

Cauliflower (5.5-7.5)

Chervil (6.0-6.7)

In general, soil with a pH level of 4.6 or less is considered to be too acidic for most plant life.

Blueberries certainly like acidic soil (about 4-5 pH) and is quite necessary for a healthy plant with good fruit production. This is not just for “serious gardeners”, but is something that blueberries need. While the plant might grow in neutral soils, the fruit production might be low and the leaves generally sparse.

Luckily roses prefer a soil pH in the neutral range. A measure between 6.0 – 7.0 would be ideal. If your soil is extremely alkaline or acidic, you might want to consider replacing it or growing your roses in containers, because adjusting soil pH is not a one time fix.

Eggplant. Eggplants also grow well in slightly acidic soil (pH level between 5.5 and 7.5). The eggplant is a heat-loving plant that requires full sun and frost-free temperatures. The crop will benefit from the addition of compost or manure to increase the amount of organic matter in the soil.

However, the best conditions for growing marigolds include full-sun and deep, fertile soil, rich in organic matter. Regardless, if your soil is not the most fertile, or if the pH is not ideal, marigolds are still able to grow and thrive, as they are not very sensitive plants.

Since your source for pine needles is probably not green, they are NOT acidic. Collecting old pine needles is pointless if you are trying to acidify your soil. The second point is that even when fresh, pine needles are only slightly acidic and therefore can have limited effect on changing the pH of the soil.

This improves drainage, and provides a row for constantly adding organic matter. Blueberry plants need full sun: Blueberries will tolerate partial shade, especially late in the day. Blueberries will grow in higher pH, but to achieve highest production, you will need to amend the soil around the plants.
