Can iPhone 5s be used on any network?

If you purchase this version from Apple you can use it on AT&T or T-Mobile. Verizon: All 4G devices, including the iPhone 5, 5s, and 5c are unlocked as a matter of corporate policy; AT&T: This phone is locked when you purchase it from its stores.

AT&T and T-Mobile are selling the GSM model (A1533); Sprint is selling the CDMA model (A1453); and Verizon Wireless is selling the CDMA model (A1533). The AT&T and T-Mobile versions of the iPhone 5S are identical. And the Verizon Wireless version of the iPhone 5S is also the same as the AT&T and T-Mobile versions.

Verizon and Sprint have used CDMA for cellular voice, AT&T and TMobile have used GSM. That means that an unlocked AT&T or TMobile phone 4G LTE capable phone could work on the 4G LTE network on Verizon. However, that phone would not work on Verizon’s CDMA network. The iPhone 6 and 6+ are 4G LTE capable phones.

CDMA and GSM are the two radio networks used by wireless carriers and present in cell phones. As such, it’s easier to take a phone from Sprint to Verizon than it is to take a phone from Sprint to AT&T, because in the former case you’re not jumping network types.

Apple confirmed the matter in fine print in the iPhone 7 tech specs and on its LTE page. A customer that purchases an iPhone 7 from Apple’s website and selects AT&T as their carrier, for example, would be unable to later use the smartphone on Verizon, Sprint, or any other CDMA network, even if the device is unlocked.

A Verizon iPhone are ready unlocked out of the box, due to the LTE bands Verizon uses (Bands 1,3,5). The iPhone can be used on the AT&T network, yes. However, since model was not specifically made for use on the AT&T network, you will not be able to access LTE. You will have access to HSPA+ though.

Verizon uses the CDMA network in the United States, but many of its devices also include an unlocked SIM slot. This means most Verizon phones — including all LTE devices — aren’t locked. Unlike Sprint, the SIM slot on Verizon iPhones comes unlocked.

Verizon Wireless is no different. If you’re a Verizon Wireless contract customer and have decided you want to switch to prepaid service, you may do so. You must keep in mind, however, that you may have to pay a termination fee if you contract is not yet fulfilled.

There’s nothing that can be done to make AT&T unlocked phones on Verizon or Sprint networks. Any AT&T that has been unlocked will be classified as ‘SIM-unlocked’ so it will only work on GSM carriers, such as T-Mobile’s GSM 2G. It won’t work on T-Mobile’s LTE, and the same principle applies to all MVNOs.

If you buy an iPhone from AT&T, it will be “locked” to AT&T’s network. That means if you try to put in a T-Mobile SIM, it won’t work. Same with an international SIM if you’re traveling. Just because you’re locked, though, doesn’t mean you can’t unlock.

Both carriers use different technology. Verizon use CDMA technology where as AT&T use GSM technology. You can not use AT&T Sim on your Verizon iPhone 6 unless you have paid off your contract or get it unlocked from Verizon. Although iPhone 6 is a world phone, meaning it can work with any sim carriers in the world.
