Can I use Minwax Polycrylic over latex paint?

You CAN use this and still apply the final Polycrylic protective finish as long as the Polycrylic is your last and final coat (no more adding chalk paint or wax once it’s applied). However, Polyurethane and wax are not friends, and they should never be used together on the same project.

Yes, you can. That is one of the benefits of using a polycrylic vs wax. If you change your mind on the color, or simply want to repaint your furniture piece later on down the road, you can do that! The poly does not need to be removed.

Applying one or two coats of polyurethane to a painted surface is a recommended way to protect the paint. Oil-based polyurethane levels out to a smoother finish, although it takes several hours longer to dry. You can apply polyurethane over any type of paint, as long as it’s clean and has been properly prepared.

Polyurethane can be oil- or water-based, and you can use either kind over latex paint; however, oil-based polyurethane tends to yellow as it ages, whereas water-based varieties stay transparent.

If you are using just the brush, you can dip right out of the can, but if you are going to use a roller, pour the poly into a tray. Roll the poly onto the surface, making sure your paint strokes are in the same direction — do not work the roller back and forth, as this will leave lines and uneven spots in its wake!

To paint a wooden surface with acrylic paint, the first step is preparing the wood. To complete this project, you need the wooden object or surface, sandpaper, tack cloths, wood primer, a palette, a paintbrush, a sponge brush, a bowl of water, paper towels, acrylic paint, and wood sealant or varnish.

Allow product to dry at least 30 minutes between coats. Sand lightly with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) and remove all dust before applying next coat. At least 3 coats are recommended. If unable to recoat within 1½ hours, wait at least 72 hours then lightly sand and recoat.

Issue sanding between coats of polyurethane

Apply a THIN coat of Minwax® Fast-Drying Polyurethane using a high-quality natural or foam brush.

Let dry 4-6 hours. Then lightly sand entire surface with fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion.

Apply second coat. If third coat is desired, repeat step 5 before application.

180 to 220 Grit Sandpaper: Finer grit sandpaper is great for removing the scratches left by coarser grits on unfinished wood and for lightly sanding between coats of paint. 320 to 400 Grit Sandpaper: Very fine grit sandpaper is used for light sanding between coats of finish and to sand metal and other hard surfaces.

Timing. Although your walls may feel dry to the touch soon after applying the first coat, wait until the paint has had enough time to cure fully before applying the second coat. Typically, your second coat of latex paint can be applied two to four hours after the first coat.

After drying, sand first coat lightly with 220 paper on a sanding block. Wipe off polyurethane dust with a soft cloth, then wipe with a tack cloth, and begin applying second coat. I do not use sandpaper on the second coat. I use medium steel wool on the second coat, and fine steel wool on the third coat.

Recoat within 2 hours. If unable to do so, wait a minimum of 72 hours, then lightly sand and recoat. Apply at least three coats on unfinished wood and two coats on surfaces already finished. After final coat, allow 24 hours before normal use.

Apply polyurethane using a bristle or foam brush about 2″ wide. Foam works well and eliminates the chore of cleaning, because the brushes are cheap and thus disposable. You can apply the first coat full strength or thinned up to half with paint thinner, making, in effect, a wiping varnish. (Use a separate can or jar.)

Apply a very thin coat of polyurethane with a fine brush, foam pad, or cloth. Work with the grain, and avoid applying too much polyurethane to avoid raising the grain. The initial coat should be dry within a couple of hours, and you can apply a second coat.

It is simply a clear polyurethane finish, but formulated to not gum up when applied with a rag. The end result is the same polyurethane finish you get with a brush, but much thinner. If you like working with oil but you need a polyurethane finish, try Wipe-On-Poly from Minwax.
