Bobcats were once found throughout most of North America from northern Mexico to southern Canada. In the early to mid 1900s, bobcat populations in many Midwestern and eastern states of the United States were decimated due to the increased value of its fur.

Few predators other than cougars and humans are able to kill an adult bobcat. Adult bobcats may receive fatal or debilitating injuries from prey animals. Young bobcats are killed by eagles, great horned owls, coyotes, foxes, bears, and adult male bobcats.

The Bobcat is a solitary and nocturnal animal that is most active in the darkness of night, tending to hunt most during dawn and dusk. During the day, Bobcats sleep and rest in dens in the form of a rock crevice or hollow tree with one individual having a number of dens within its home range.

Be sure the guard is at least 6 feet high. Bobcats are excellent climbers and can jump fences that are over 6 feet tall. Many wild animals – like the above bobcat – will appear to be tame when they are very young. But they are and will always be wild animals. And as they mature, most “tame” wild animals will begin to exhibit behaviors that are really inappropriate in house pets – viciously attacking unfamiliar humans, for example.

Bobcats are carnivores and thus prefer an all meat diet. Their food of choice is rabbits, but they will also eat birds, lizards, rodents, snakes, and carrion. On occasion they have been known to kill deer. Predators of the bobcat include mountain lions, coyotes, foxes, owls, wolves, and humans.

According to Defenders of Wildlife, a conservation group based in Washington D.C., there are about 750,000 to 1,020,000 bobcats as of 2009. The International Species Information Service lists 245 captive bobcats worldwide, with 191 being in U.S. zoos.

Bobcats are sometimes mistaken for mountain lions – but they look quite different. Mountain lions are much larger, and have a long (not bobbed) tail as the following pictures show. The bobcat silhouette (front) below shows the relative size of a bobcat to a mountain lion.

When it comes to identifying a cat as a lynx, it’s not the eyes that have it, but the ears. The lynx is known by the tuft of black hair on the tips of its ears and its short or bobbed tail. In fact, one species of lynx is called a bobcat! All lynx have these tufts, but their purpose isn’t completely clear.

Bobcats don’t do a lot of running, yet they can reach speeds of 25 to 30 mph in short bursts. They lie in wait for prey or stalk it, rarely needing to run it down. Their greatest hunting power may be their pounce. A bobcat can leap 12 feet to take down prey.

They have long legs, large paws, and tufted ears similar to those of their larger relative, the Canada lynx. Most bobcats are brown or brownish red with a white underbelly and short, black-tipped tail. The cat is named for its tail, which appears to be cut or “bobbed.”

Adult males can range in weight from 6.4 to 18.3 kg (14 to 40 lb), with an average of 9.6 kg (21 lb); females at 4 to 15.3 kg (8.8 to 33.7 lb), with an average of 6.8 kg (15 lb). The largest bobcat accurately measured on record weighed 22.2 kg (49 lb), although unverified reports have them reaching 27 kg (60 lb).

On the Internet, people ask whether bobcats hibernate or migrate. The answer is that bobcats neither hibernate nor migrate. No wild cat species hibernates or migrates. They are simply not one of those species which do these sorts of things.

Bobcats are strict, but generalist, carnivores. Their diet is entirely made up prey species (ie., other animals they prey on), but they don’t specialize on any one prey type. Bobcats primarily eat small mammals, but may also prey on birds and reptiles.

Like coyotes, they hunt in packs. bringing down large prey, such as moose and elk as well as smaller mammals. Coyotes are not preferred prey, but wolves will kill them to cut down competition for food and may eat them.

The bobcat is a carnivore and eats a wide variety of small mammals like woodchucks, rabbits, skunks, raccoons, moles and squirrels. It also eats birds and reptiles. One of the most common prey of the bobcat is the cotton-tail rabbit. Occasionally the bobcat will kill larger prey like deer.

Along with the panther, the wild bobcat is one of two predatory big cats native to the Florida region. The bobcat is more common and much smaller than the panther, which is rarely sighted in the wild. Bobcats are found throughout the state from the deepest swamps to suburban backyards.

The female is pregnant for 62 to 73 days before she gives birth. A group of baby lynx is called a litter; individual cats in the litter are called kittens. A litter usually consists of one to eight kittens.

Two adaptations of the bobcat are sharp claws and teeth. Both of these help it hunt. Its fur changes color with the seasons, and helps it blend in with the colors of the season. The bobcat is common in North America, but it is rarely seen due to its camouflage.
