Are miscarriages always painful?

About one of every four pregnant women has some bleeding during the first few months. About half of these women stop bleeding and have a normal pregnancy. The bleeding and pain associated with threatened miscarriage are usually mild. Bleeding may be heavy and abdominal pain is almost always present.

The usual symptoms of miscarriage are vaginal bleeding and lower tummy (abdominal) cramps. You may then pass something from the vagina, which often looks like a blood clot or clots. For most women, the bleeding is heavy with clots but not severe – it is more like a heavy period.

Incomplete Miscarriage Definition. A miscarriage is labeled “incomplete” if bleeding has begun and the cervix is dilated, but tissue from the pregnancy still remains in the uterus. Most of the time, a miscarriage that is “incomplete” at the time of diagnosis will run its course without further intervention.

There will be some blood clots, and you may notice tissue that is firmer or lumpy-looking, which is placental or afterbirth tissue. You may or may not see tissue that looks like an embryo or fetus. If this is a recurrent (not first) miscarriage, you may want to save the tissue for testing.

Symptoms of early miscarriage

Bleeding – light bleeding early in pregnancy is fairly common, and does not mean you will have a miscarriage.

Passage of tissue through the vagina.

A gush of clear or pink vaginal fluid.

Abdominal pain or cramping.

Pregnancy symptoms, such as breast tenderness and nausea, begin to go away.

This occurs when a pregnancy is lost shortly after implantation, resulting in bleeding that occurs around the time of her expected period. The woman may not realize that she conceived when she experiences a chemical pregnancy. Most miscarriages occur during the first 13 weeks of pregnancy.

Some babies die in the uterus (womb) before they are born (called an intra-uterine fetal death). It can happen during the last half of pregnancy or, more rarely, during the labour and birth, when it is known as intrapartum death. When the baby who has died during labour and birth is born, this is called a stillbirth.

According to national estimates, roughly 15 to 20 percent of all pregnancies in the United States end in miscarriage, defined as the loss of a fetus before the 20th week. The majority of miscarriages occur within the first seven weeks of pregnancy.

With a missed miscarriage, the placenta may still release hormones, which can continue the signs of pregnancy for women. However, some women may notice that their pregnancy symptoms, like breast tenderness, nausea, or fatigue, may disappear. Some may also have brownish or red vaginal discharge.

A miscarriage is the loss of a fetus before the 20th week of pregnancy. The medical term for a miscarriage is spontaneous abortion, but “spontaneous” is the key word here because the condition is not an abortion in the common definition of the term.

A chemical pregnancy is actually a very early miscarriage, which takes place before anything can be seen on an ultrasound scan – usually around the fifth week that you are pregnant. It means that a sperm has fertilised your egg, but later on, the egg fails to survive.

Stillbirth is the delivery, after the 20th week of pregnancy, of a baby who has died. Loss of a baby before the 20th week of pregnancy is called a miscarriage. A baby is stillborn in about 1 in 200 pregnancies.
